Remember to Rejoice: Finding Joy Through God’s Faithfulness, Promises, and Redemption

Pastor Victoria Sowell

Life often pulls us in a thousand different directions, making it easy to forget the goodness we’ve experienced along the way. But what if remembering could reignite joy in our hearts? Psalm 103 offers a powerful reminder of the blessings we have through God’s faithfulness, promises, and redemption. Click the link above for the full message.

Why Remembering Matters

Psalm 103:1-12 speaks of praising God with all that we are and not forgetting His benefits. It highlights forgiveness, healing, redemption, and God’s unwavering love. This Psalm is a call to remember who God is and what He has done. When life feels overwhelming, remembering these truths can ground us and restore our joy.

The Science Behind Memory and Joy

Studies show that memory is deeply connected to a sense of purpose and emotional well-being. Research from Florida University found that people who reflect on meaningful memories often experience greater mental clarity and stability. When life gets chaotic, remembering what matters can anchor our sense of identity and purpose.

1. Remember God’s Faithfulness in the Past

Our Stories Reveal God’s Character

Looking back at our lives can remind us of God’s unwavering presence. Each answered prayer, each moment of grace, tells a story of God’s faithfulness. When doubt creeps in, remembering how God has worked before can strengthen our faith.

Biblical Reminders of Faithfulness

Throughout Scripture, God’s people were commanded to remember His works. In Deuteronomy 8:2, Moses urges the Israelites, "Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness." Similarly, Jesus instituted communion with the words, "Do this in remembrance of me" (Luke 22:19).

Practical Ways to Remember

  • Tell Your Story: Share your testimony with someone.

  • Journal God's Works: Write down moments of answered prayers.

  • Create Visual Reminders: Use symbolic items that remind you of God’s provision.

2. Remember God’s Promises for Today

Promises That Never Fail

God’s promises aren’t relics of the past. They are alive and active today. Psalm 103 reminds us that God is compassionate, gracious, and abounding in love. He doesn’t treat us as our sins deserve but removes our transgressions "as far as the east is from the west."

When Life Feels Uncertain

In moments of uncertainty, God’s promises act as a guiding light. Paul echoes this in Romans 8:38-39, declaring that nothing can separate us from God’s love. His promises sustain us even in life’s darkest seasons.

A GPS for Life

Much like a GPS recalibrating when we take a wrong turn, God’s promises guide us back when we feel lost. Trusting His Word is like following a reliable map, no matter how confusing life’s journey seems.

Promises to Hold Onto Today:

  • Peace in Trials: "Take heart; I have overcome the world" (John 16:33).

  • Hope in Uncertainty: "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace" (Romans 15:13).

3. Remember God’s Redemption Through Christ

The Heart of the Gospel

The ultimate source of joy comes from Jesus Christ. His life, death, and resurrection fulfill God’s greatest promise—redemption. Jesus’s sacrifice reconciles us to God and secures our future in His eternal kingdom.

A Kingdom That Cannot Be Shaken

Psalm 103:19 declares, "The Lord has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all." Jesus inaugurated this unshakable kingdom, and it continues to advance through His people, empowered by the Holy Spirit.

The Hope We Have in Jesus

Because of Jesus, our lives are marked by grace, hope, and joy. Remembering this central truth keeps our hearts anchored, even when life feels uncertain.

Living a Life of Rejoicing

Remembering isn’t just a mental exercise; it’s a spiritual discipline. Reflecting on God’s faithfulness, trusting His promises, and embracing His redemption leads to lasting joy. Life’s circumstances may change, but God’s goodness remains constant.

Take Action Today:

  • Reflect on a time when God showed up in your life.

  • Memorize a promise from Scripture that speaks to your current situation.

  • Share the hope of Jesus with someone who needs encouragement.
