Discover Everyday Miracles: Trusting God in Your Daily Life
Pastor Kyle Veach
Miracles. When you hear that word, what comes to mind? Maybe it's something dramatic like the parting of the Red Sea or Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. But what if miracles are more common than we realize, woven into the fabric of our everyday lives? What if we're so focused on the spectacular that we miss the ordinary miracles happening around us? Miracles in Everyday Life
We often think of miracles as grand, unexplainable events, but miracles can be found in the mundane. Think about a moment when something small yet significant happened to you—like when your kids did the laundry without being asked. These are the everyday miracles that remind us God is always at work around us, for His glory and our good.
Defining Miracles
A miracle can be described as an event that defies common expectations and is attributed to a superhuman agent, demonstrating God's involvement in human affairs. This perspective helps us recognize that God sees us, knows us, and is working out life on our behalf.
The Problem
In 2 Kings 4:1-7, we read about a widow who faced a dire situation. Her husband, a member of the group of prophets, had died, leaving her with debts that threatened to enslave her two sons. This wasn't a minor inconvenience—it was a life-or-death crisis.
"One day the widow of a member of the group of prophets came to Elisha and cried out, ‘My husband who served you is dead, and you know how he feared the Lord. But now a creditor has come, threatening to take my two sons as slaves.'" (2 Kings 4:1 NLT)
Facing Our Own Problems
We all encounter problems that seem insurmountable. They push us to the brink, revealing who we truly trust. In moments of desperation, do we turn to God or rely on our own strength? Difficult situations are opportunities for us to deepen our faith and trust in God. Exodus 14:14 reminds us,
“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still." (Exodus 14:14, NLT)
This verse encourages us to trust in God's plan and His timing, even when it feels like life is falling apart.
The Answer
When the widow sought help from Elisha, he didn't give her money or resources. Instead, he asked her a crucial question: "What do you have?"
"What can I do to help you?” Elisha asked. “Tell me, what do you have in the house?” “Nothing at all, except a flask of olive oil,” she replied." (2 Kings 4:2 NLT)
Using What We Have
Elisha's response teaches us that God often uses what we already have to perform miracles. We tend to focus on what we lack, but God sees potential in what we possess. The widow had only a small flask of olive oil, yet God used it to meet her needs.
"And Elisha said, ‘Borrow as many empty jars as you can from your friends and neighbors. Then go into your house with your sons and shut the door behind you. Pour olive oil from your flask into the jars, setting each one aside when it is filled.’” (2 Kings 4:3-4 NLT)
This passage underscores the importance of community. The widow needed her neighbors' jars to see the miracle unfold. Similarly, our relationships and connections can be channels through which God's provision flows.
The Miracle
The widow followed Elisha's instructions, and as she poured the oil, it kept flowing until every jar was full. The oil only stopped when there were no more jars left.
"So she did as she was told. Her sons kept bringing jars to her, and she filled one after another. Soon every container was full to the brim! ‘Bring me another jar,’ she said to one of her sons. ‘There aren’t any more!’ he told her. And then the olive oil stopped flowing." (2 Kings 4:5-6 NLT)
Recognizing God's Provision
The miracle of the oil demonstrates that God provides abundantly when we act in faith. It wasn't about making the widow rich but about meeting her immediate needs and giving her a sustainable solution.
"When she told the man of God what had happened, he said to her, ‘Now sell the olive oil and pay your debts, and you and your sons can live on what is left over.’” (2 Kings 4:7 NLT)
This story teaches us that God’s miracles often require our participation. We need to trust Him and take steps of faith, using what we have, to see His provision manifest.
Trusting God with Our Needs
God always blesses those who dare to trust Him. We should trust Him regardless of our circumstances, having faith even when there seems to be no hope. The widow’s story is a powerful reminder that God cares deeply about our needs and has the power to provide in unexpected ways.
Reflecting on Our Own Lives
What is it that you are facing today that requires a miracle? Whether it’s a job, mental health, marriage, or addiction, God is ready to intervene. You might need to let a friend or neighbor borrow a jar or ask for one yourself. Community plays a vital role in how God works in our lives.
